I am halfway into the book, and like the story and the NC mountain setting. However, it often seems as if an adolescent boy is writing when every time he describes a female character (other than the senior citizens) he has to talk about her body, her breast size, and what she is wearing to enhance all of this. It doesn't matter! I am tempted not to finish it--but probably will.Product details

Mountain woman Queenie Weaver wants to protect her property from some slick land grabbers. Rick Ryder, lawyer and private investigator, with Queenie are out looking over her property when they discover a dead body at the bottom of a waterfall. When a marijuana plot is also discovered on her land, she is arrested for murder and growing weed. Rick is enlisted by Queenie's attorney to investigate. Wilson does a fine job of thickening the plot and bringing it to a conclusion. With the case solved, the final paragraph let's you know Rick Ryder isn't ready for retirement yet.
This is a fun read! There is good character development. Author did a good job of describing the locale...knowing the area, I knew the locations but also recognized some personalities (but I'm not telling who!). This is a good mystery for an afternoon read.
I love a good mystery, and this one is definitely a thriller! The mountain setting and "colorful" characters rounded the story out very well. I highly recommend this book!
Killer Weed is an interesting mystery that unfolds smoothly yet keeps you up to read "one more chapter" or two. The descriptions of the area were lovely and the characters were developed in such a way as to really feel like you are getting to know them. I am looking forward to reading more about Rick and seeing how his various relationships develop.
This will be the perfect summertime beach read, just as it was the perfect fireside read.
R.F. Wilson's "Killer Weed" is a murder mystery, but not your usual murder mystery. Rick Ryder does not have typical jaded ex-cop resume' of a private eye and the setting, the mountains of North Carolina, is not the typical big city. But dead bodies keep turning up and there is arson and even a kidnapping, which keep the story moving along, smartly. The characters are interesting and well developed. This is an enjoyable read. I am looking forward to the next Rick Ryder mystery.
Great book! Perhaps having lived in the area and having shared interest in the addiction/drug issues, it was especially captivating to me. However, the author did a wonderful job of character and story development. I hope this series continues and gets a much wider audience.
I hope Robert Wilson has another Rick Ryder book coming out soon.
I have been a long time reader of mysteries. As I was reading Killer Weed I kept comparing Wilson's style and characters to other authors. His style was easy to read like Robert Parker or John McDonald. Rick was like Spencer has a secure but more traditional relationship. Rick shares a provocative assertiveness of both Spencer and Travis McGee, but with less machismo.
Wilson captures the environment of North Carolina like Jamie Lee Burke does the delta. But the environment is less allegorical than Burke's. Like Dave Robicheau, Rick is an alcoholic, but with more self insight and self-control. Wilson's characters are as well developed as Burke's, but for the most part without the deeply ingrained malicious evil. Wilson's approach, for me, highlighted the angst of being human more poignantly. Like Mayor, whose novels are set in Vermont, Wilson captures the area and its people well.
Rick's varied backgrounds make him interesting. How he wrestles with being honest with himself and his, sometimes ignored, insights heighten and illuminate his humanity. He, like many other private eyes that live by a moral code, does so with more humility.
While Rick evidently has some possibly crippling personal history he seems further along in his journey to wholeness than Robert Greenleaf's Marshall Tanner and most other PIs like Scotsman Ian Rankin's embittered and lost John Rebus.
In tone and tenor Rick reminded me of Kinsey Malone (author Sue Grafton) and Anna Pigeon in Nevada Barr's novels. For Kinsey Malone novels it was the surrounding cast where I saw similarities-intriguing individuals with a depth, perspective and foibles of their own. Anna and her husband's relationship seems shallow compared to Rick and Kathy's. Their relationship is a model to which other marriages could and should aspire.
Killer Weed for me had more texture, richer characters and mini-plots than Toni Hillerman's Sheriff Chee and J.A. Jance's J.P. Beaumont, Joanna Brady or Alli Reynolds. It had the quality of her Seattle cop, J.P. Beaumont. But Rick lacks Beau's wealth which may limit plot lines, but increases the struggle to live and solve problems within more realistic and human limits.
Rick, being a one winged warrior, was unique to the PI genre. It opened another whole area of living with disability to explore. Working for an environmental group was a novel twist, setting an opportunity to address a very pressing social issue.
Some of these comparisons are unfair, as Wilson has not had the opportunity to develop characters over a series of books, which I have seen in other authors. But he has set the stage for excavating Rick's past as well as open future with such a breadth in his background. .
