As someone who is old enough to remember the likes of Warlock, Girlschool, and Rock Goddess the first time around and who is a big fan of the current explosion in female-fronted Metal this is an absolute must read!!

Well researched by someone who is clearly a fan but who also beyond the obvious and looks at what drives these ladies to succeed in what is often a very macho, male dominated, genre. It mostly covers the world of Symphonic Metal, a genre where it is usual to have a famale vocalist, often a classically-trained soprano, but the likes of Lzzy Hale from Halestorm and Maria Brinks from In This moment and others ensure there is a cross-representation from many other sub-genres of Hard Rock and Heavy Metal.

Not Just Tits in a Corset Jill Hughes Kirtland 9780991501519 Books Reviews

I found this book very interesting and found it difficult to put it down! Not having knowledge of a broad range of female metal artists, especially those who were the early ones on the scene, I also found the book educational - but just enough so it still moved along and stayed interesting. I enjoyed all of the great photos in the book and hearing what some of the artists I am familiar with had to say. I feel the author was successful in describing the evolution of women in metal, the challenges they face now and in the future, but most importantly, the realization that they are here to stay!
Not Just Tits in a Corset Celebrating Women in Metal" by Jill Hughes Kirtland.
Book review by Craig Caron.

There was a decent amount of buzz regarding this book online, the title and the cover featuring Lacuna Coil's superb front woman, It immediately caught my interest.
Personal experiences fuel Jill's motivation for writing this book and it is a statement to the music industry on how women were treated (and still are to perhaps a lesser degree) in the metal and hard rock community.
It started for her when she was booking gigs for a band she was asked over the phone by a promoter, so who is the guy you are sleeping with in the band? It is this type of thought process that metal is a man's world and women don't belong in the scene whatsoever.
No matter if they worked harder; which they had to do to gain any slight bit of acceptance or success.
Jill does a fantastic job with the way the book is written and drives her point home by sharing conversations with the female musicians, promoters, writers, etc. You read the comments first then at the end of each segment their name is mentioned as well as the bands they are and were in.
I really enjoyed this as it did not feel like a standard interview and has the feel of just friends sharing a conversation. It makes for a very interesting read as you get some very candid stories of some of the treatment they received from metal fans, the media, and other bands. If you are not familiar with some of the musicians in the book there are many wonderful photos, many taken by Jill herself.
The book starts with stories from bands like the Runaways in the late 70's and bands including Girlschool, Bitch, Hellion and of course Doro Pesch, who wrote a heartfelt forward for the book.
These were the hardest times in metal for females, people told them they didn't belong. This was especially difficult in the 80's, but their strength and determination brought the world some astounding music.
When the 90's rolled many more female musicians arose with so many styles of metal, vocal styles, and of course the time of the corsets. With bands like Nightwish, The Gathering, Within Temptation, and Lacuna Coil making waves and becoming popular in many countries, proving that women do belong and continue to flourish.
Jill also talks about the awfully named "Hottest Chicks in Metal" tour which does feature many very talented women but it seems like it is promoted as "eye candy" as opposed to promoting them for the wealth of their talent.
I had a really hard time putting this fascinating and very well written book down. You can feel the love and hard work the author put into it.
I feel that this book is a must read for any music fan and those who support women in metal for their extraordinary talent and not just about their looks.
Some of my favorite excerpts came from the always entertaining Lisa Middlehauve, Xandria, Lindsay Schoolcraft, Cradle of Filth, Charlotte Wessels from Delain, and Anneke Van Giersbergen The Gathering and solo artist.

This amazing book can be purchased through Jill's site at http//www.jillkirtland.com/.
