Wanniukaga is the last of his people. No one else carries on his cultural traditions. It was the end of the world for the healer and spiritual leader. He is four hundred years old, and he is not alone. Afflicted by vampirism from those who slaughtered his nation, Wanniukaga is further burdened with the spirits of his people inside his mind. Shattered by hard economic times St. Louis lays atop an older city whose people died out centuries ago, save for Wanniukaga who wanders its urban decay to this day. Locked in a struggle to preserve his people's traditions and adapt to accelerating change the healer must balance his many personalities. Two homeless teenagers befriend and help Wanniukaga through difficult times against other vampires responsible for the death of his people, evade religiously motivated amateur vampire slayers and confront a hardhearted Squad Five operator stepping outside the rules of his unit.

I admit the idea of a Native American vampire wasn’t initially sexy to me, though it was interesting enough to make me agree to review this boo. Barer of the Ghost Nation did not disappoint, though at first I didn’t feel anything for the main protagonist and his cronies except pity.

The book begins with the Native American, Wanniukaga, discovering Kera, a teenage prostitute and another vampire, Warren, who often buys blood from Kera. There is also Kera’s fellow runaway, Jordan. Wanniukaga saves Kera and Warren from a pack of “Van Helsings”, aka amateur Christian vampire hunters, and while Kera and her friends admit Wanniukaga is odd, then band together with him. There is also an evil legionnaire vampire, Derik, who wreaks more than a little havoc in the latter half of this work.

Why is Wanniukaga odd? Because, like the book title indicates, he is literally the barer of the Ghost nation; a vampire that carries the souls of his dead people with him. What this means is that frequently, Wanniukaga lets one of the other spirits take control of his body and speak through him. Some of the noteworthy people/spirits are East Wind Speaks, who is the only one who understands English; Grey Knife, a chief good at killing and making weapons, as well as a shapeshifter. While at first I thought this idea of a vampire of many spirits too convoluted to work—and the execution is more than a little confusing at first—I really grew to like the character of Wanniukaga and wanted him to have a happy ending. But I admit of all these characters, my favorite was Plucked Raven, a huge albino vampire bat whose origin story might be the most creative piece of fiction I have read in years (he is literally an external part of W and the Ghost Nation, without spoiling too much of his origin story). It might be worth being a vampire, if I could have one of these for a companion (and rescuer).

Where is Squad V in all of this? Hunting vampires of course, while also trying to keep the amateurs out of the way. Add into the mix a concerned Native American researcher, Iris, and this makes for an interesting installment of the series. A lot of research went into this novel, which made for interesting reading and gave a depth and realism to the Native American characters.

I will add here that while I really enjoy this author’s sense of humor and knack for imaginative plots, this book does not flow when you read it. You will need to re-read sections frequently to make sure you get the intended meaning. But this is a good fantasy novel, in that once I was into the characters (about Chapter 6) I really wanted to know what was going to happen next.
I especially enjoyed the epilogue, which not only tied up all the loose ends, but gave closure while being very satisfying in the extreme.

Overall opinion: Very good ideas and plot, but an effort to read.
